Bear Butte State Park
Bear Butte State Park is located 6 mi (9.7 km) northeast of Sturgis and features the well known Mato Pata, or Bear Mountain, a place sacred to many American Indian tribes. The on-site Bear Butte Education Center reveals the geology and history of the mountain, and the history and culture of the Cheyenne and Lakota people. Hikers, cyclists, horseback riders and fishers are attracted to this intriguing park, keen to catch a glimpse of the wild buffalo herd.
