Angostura Recreation Area Located in southern Black Hills, the Angostura Recreation Area is popular with water-lovers as the expansive Angostura Reservoir offers excellent fishing, boating, swimming and natural sandy beaches. Bear Butte State Park Bear Butte State Park is located 6 mi (9.7 km) northeast of Sturgis and features the well known Mato Pata, or Bear Mountain, a place sacred to many American Indian tribes. The on-site Bear Butte Education Center reveals the geology and history of the mountain, and the history and culture of the Cheyenne and Lakota people. Badlands National Park is located 51 miles east of Rapid City on 64,000 acres of wilderness area. It is the largest protected mixed grass prairie in the United States. It contains the world's richest Oligocene epoch fossil beds. The Evolution of some animals can be studied in the Badlands formations.

Located about 40 minutes southeast from downtown Rapid City, Custer State Park encompasses seventy-three thousand acres of land. Buffalo and other wild animals roam freely in the park and jeep tours can help to get an up-close view of these creatures. Park rangers lead guided nature walks and evening campfire programs. Roads, such as the Wildlife Loop, Needles Highway and Iron Mountain Road, run through the park highlighting some of the most scenic areas. Many landmarks and formations are outlined throughout the park as well as the Black Hills Play House. Ranger programs include guided hikes and Junior Naturalist programs, to name a few. The main features of the Wind Cave National Park include one of the world's longest and most complex caves and 30,000 acres of mixed prairie, pine forests and wildlife. One of America's most well-known sights, the Mount Rushmore National Memorial is located at Keystone about 35 miles from Rapid City. The granite sculptures of the heads of George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Abraham Lincoln and Theodore Roosevelt were constructed between 1927 and 1941. Visitors can partake in ranger or self-guided tours of the mountain sculpture. Stroll along the presidential trail for an 'up-close' look. The sculptors studio contains some original sketches of the designs for the mountain. This park also contains the Lincoln Borglum Museum and a visitor's information center.
